Etna erupted on the 12th January 2011. Tremors were detected at around 21:00 GMT on the 11th and the tremors were strongest on the morning of the 12th. Lava erupted over 1,300 meters high and the local airport had to be temporarily closed due to the ash in the air. This meant that many travellers couldn't fly but this affected less people as not many people use the airport. The eruption lasted for about a day and no-one was injured and no-one died. This was because Mt Etna is a frequently erupting volcano and everyone was prepared. The magma also runs slowly down the mountain and so people could outrun it. The eruption had some social effects such as people couldn't travel for a few hours. Also, it destroyed some of the crops on the volcanic ground which was very rich in minerals due to the eruptions. The eruption destroyed some of the vineyards which meant that many farmers would lose money and trading would slow down. Also, nearby houses and other buildings were covered in ash which would have to be cleaned up after.
